12 books on dermatology such as China Atlas of Dermatology and Venereology (1998), Current therapy on Dermatology and Venereology (2006, the 3ed Edition), Textbook of Dermatology and Venereology (2002), Histological Diagnosis of skin diseases (2002, 2ed edition), Diagnosis and Therapy Handbook (including 38 books. 2001, 2ed etdition) were published as author or chief editor and 16 academic books on dermatology, pharmacology, dermatological immunology were contributed.
Dr. Zhu is one of the leading Dermatologist in China. Dr. Zhu divides his time among patient care, medical research, education of medical students and postgraduate students, dermatologists training and chairing the department.
As a professor of medical teaching hospital, Dr. Zhu paid great attention to the daily teaching work. More than 300 post-graduate students as well as research fellows, further training doctors from all over China have been trained in the department, many of them became the leading Dermatologists in local provinces. To recognize the contribution to the development of dermatology in China, the department was awarded as the key department of the nation by Ministry of Education. Dr. Zhu is very prestigious and known well in the country for his work. He is the guess professor of XinJing Medical University, KumMing Medical University and NieMeng Medical University. Dr. Zhu has been awarded as the best teacher by Peking University.
His research mainly focuses on bullous diseases and genetic diseases, including acquired as well as congenital disorders. Over 350 papers in medical journals have been published. Dr. Zhu and his team first disclosed that the associated tumors of paraneoplastic pemphigus could produce the antibodies which played a key role in the pathogenesis of the disease. Dr. Zhu formulated the treatment regimen for pemphigus and bullous pemphigoid which greatly improved the prognosis of this life threatening disorders in China.
His research team started to study on the genetic diseases since 1994 and great scientific success has been achieved. Over 45 academic papers has published and contributed to the identification of more than 10 novel causative gene mutations in patients with genetic skin disease. In 2003, Dr. Zhu and his group first found the mutations causing primary erythermalgia, which encoding a voltage-gated sodium channel alpha subunit predominantly expressed in sensory and sympathetic neurons, thereby providing a clue for the further study of pain and peripheral vasomotor regulation. The team successfully performed the first DNA-based diagnosis in China in a family with Halopean-Siemens RDEB, then several other severe congenital disorders. Now the department was authorized by the municipal bureau of public health as the prenatal diagnostic center for hereditary skin disorders.
Dr. Zhu is the first dermatologist who was send by the government to have a further training in U.S.A. since the openning policy was adapted in 1980’s. Dr. Zhu has been involving many exchange programs between China and foreign countries. The first Dermatology delegation from U.S.A. was organized by Professor Rudolf Baer and Dr. ZHU in 1982. Dr. Zhu successfully organized the 5th Asia Dermatology Congress(ADC) in 1998, the 12th South East Asia Western Pacific conference of the international union against sexually transmitted infections(IUSTI) in 2002, the third world congress of international academy of cosmetic dermatology(IACD) in 2003 and the 1st national congress of China Dermatology Association(CDA) in 2005.
Dr. Zhu has received many awards and honors including the prize for the advancement of Medical Sciences, awarded by the Ministry of Health in 1993, 1994 1997, Ministry of Education in 1998,1999 and Beijing municipal in 2003,2004, 2005; the prize for Scientific Achievement, awarded by the Beijing Medical University and the Wu Jieping Medical Research award and Jonsson Pharmaceutical Research Award in 1997. He was honored by the Ministry of Health with the title of the Young and Middle aged specialist with outstanding achievement in 1994. He was awarded the outstanding achievement on STD/AIDS prevention and control in 1999 by the Ministry of Health. Dr. Zhu has been included in the list of Government Subsidy for Prominent Scholars since 1992
